Final 2022/23 EFL Trophy group opponent confirmed

23 June 2022

Crystal Palace Under-21s have been added to Swindon Town’s group which completes the draw for the 2022/23 EFL Trophy.

Scott Lindsey’s side will also come up against Bristol Rovers and Plymouth Argyle in Group E, as Town prepare to battle it out once again in the Southern Section.

Last season, Swindon won their respective group in the competition, recording maximum points from their three matches with victories over Arsenal Under-21s, Newport County and Argyle, before going out to Colchester United in the second round.

It was the first time they’d progressed to the latter stages of the competition since the 2017-18 campaign.

Town will take on Bristol Rovers, who produced one of the most dramatic final day performances in EFL history last term, as Joey Barton’s charges hit Scunthorpe United for seven to pip Northampton Town to automatic promotion to League One.

Plymouth Argyle are also in the group – a side we met at the same stage of the competition last season.

A Macaulay Gillesphey own goal and strikes from Jayden Mitchell-Lawson and Harry McKirdy earned The Reds a 3-1 victory at Home Park in the October fixture.

We’ll also come up against The Eagles Under-21 side, managed by former Palace player Paddy McCarthy.

They managed just the single win in last seasons competition as they finished bottom of their respective group, which featured Sutton United, Portsmouth and AFC Wimbledon.
